As We Do

by Isabella Laba

Driving in circles, rain sprinkling windows;
The best times are when we have no plans.

When we do, it stays in texts;
Chat possibilities, get excited about the beach,
Snowflakes sprinkling our face—
So far away we say, “Yes, definitely,”
Then never do.

Showed me your place,
A direction you knew.
Moving out, exploring far towns.
Be on your own,
Make decisions on a throne.

But now I’m thinking of when you were two minutes away,
Could’ve just walked over, said “Hey.”
See where the conversation leads
And if I had to leave, two minutes a breeze.
Played cards on the deck, watched a movie unknown,
Secrets we knew, under the moon.

Now that we’re moving on,
Secrets told through the phone.
Even though our distance may grow,
Big plans lie anew.

As friends move to different cities,
Friendship will not move.
I think it will grow,
Just as we do.
